Remote work is a permanent part of the global job market, but access to it is not equal. Companies in the US, UK, Canada and Europe do hire from anywhere — and a growing number of platforms restrict which countries they accept, or pay only through rails that do not work where you live. This guide covers ten legitimate remote jobs you can realistically start, and, just as importantly, which of them are actually open to readers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, India and the Philippines.

Before You Start: Check Two Things
First, your payment rail. This decides which platforms are usable more often than your skills do. PayPal cannot receive payments in Nigeria or Ghana — accounts there are send-only, and the “PayPal is back in Nigeria” claims circulating in 2026 appear only on blogs, with no announcement from PayPal itself. Kenya can receive through a licensed local partner. India receives international payments only. Payoneer, Grey, Raenest (formerly Geegpay) and Chipper Cash are the practical alternatives in West Africa, and Upwork pays direct to a local bank for $0.99 in 40+ countries, including to M-Pesa in Kenya.
Second, the country line on every listing. Many roles advertised as “remote” mean “remote within the US”. Filter before you apply, every time.
1. Customer Support Representative
The most accessible entry point, and one of the few categories that genuinely hires beginners because training is provided. Most international support work is email and chat rather than voice, which helps if your accent concerns you. The realistic route for this audience is contract work through Upwork and smaller companies that hire internationally, rather than large brands whose remote roles are usually country-restricted. 2. Virtual Assistant
VAs handle scheduling, inbox management, research and admin for founders and small businesses. An important correction: the VA agencies usually recommended — Belay, Time Etc and Fancy Hands — are US-only, and none accepts applicants from any of the countries above. Your routes are Upwork, Fiverr, OnlineJobs.ph if you are Filipino, and direct clients. Realistic earnings are $200–$600 a month starting out and $700–$1,500 after about a year. Full guide here.
3. Data Entry and Transcription
The lowest barrier, the lowest pay and by far the most scams. Two current restrictions matter: Outlier (Scale AI) does not list Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana among permitted countries under its policy effective 15 July 2026, and it prohibits VPN workarounds; and Rev and TranscribeMe pay through PayPal, which Nigeria and Ghana cannot receive. 4. Online Tutor or Teacher
The fastest route to a first payment if you already have a subject. Chegg’s expert programme has closed — its Q&A service shut down permanently on 18 March 2026 — so ignore any guide recommending it. Preply and italki both work and both pay through Payoneer, which matters in West Africa. 5. Freelance Writer or Editor
Still viable, but honestly changed. Upwork’s own blog names content writing as a category seeing declines as AI tools automate parts of the work, and writing does not appear in the top ten of any category in its 2026 demand report. Generic blog writing at low rates is the part being automated; writing that requires subject knowledge, interviews or original data is not. Start at that end. 6. Social Media Manager
Small businesses need Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn managed and rarely have time to do it. Learn the fundamentals free through platform-provided courses, then manage two or three small clients to build a portfolio. Packaged monthly retainers work far better here than hourly rates, and this is one category where clients care about results rather than where you live.
7. Web Developer
One of the highest-paying remote skills and genuinely open to the self-taught. Front-end work (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React) and WordPress development are in steady demand, and free resources such as freeCodeCamp and The Odin Project can take a consistent learner from zero to job-ready in six to twelve months. 8. Graphic Designer
Figma and Canva have lowered the barrier considerably. Build a portfolio of eight to ten strong pieces — redesigning real brands as practice is fine, clearly labelled as unofficial — and sell packaged services rather than open-ended hourly work. “Social media kit for $X” converts better than “$Y per hour”.
9. Bookkeeper
The most underrated entry on this list. Certification in QuickBooks or Xero takes weeks rather than years, the work is recurring monthly income rather than one-off projects, and demand is constant. It is also a sensible destination for anyone currently doing data entry, since it uses the same accuracy and spreadsheet skills at a much higher rate.
10. Community and Content Moderator
Platforms hire moderators to review content and enforce guidelines. The work needs judgement and consistency rather than technical skills, and multilingual applicants have a real advantage. One honest caution: content moderation can involve exposure to distressing material, and you should ask what the role covers and what support exists before accepting.
Where to Find Legitimate Remote Jobs
Stick to established boards and official company career pages. We Work Remotely is free to job seekers, as is Remote.co. Remote OK has a free tier plus paid plans at $14.95 and $29.95 a month on a 12-month commitment with no free trial. FlexJobs is subscription-only — a 14-day trial at $2.95 that then auto-renews at $23.95 every four weeks, which is a significant recurring cost in naira, cedis or shillings, so diarise the cancellation date if you try it. LinkedIn filtered by “Remote” and Wellfound for startups are both free and worth checking weekly.
For freelance work, Upwork charges a variable 0–15% service fee per contract (the old 20/10/5 tiers no longer apply) plus $0.15 per Connect, and Fiverr takes 20%. Both are legitimate and both are competitive — a specialised profile beats a general one every time.
How to Spot and Avoid Remote Job Scams
Employment fraud complaints to the FBI’s IC3 reached 24,688 in 2025, up 23% year on year, with over $362 million in reported losses — and IC3’s definition includes people who unwittingly launder money while believing they are employed.
The golden rule, in the FTC’s own words: never pay to get paid or to get a job. Not for training, not for equipment, not for registration. Walk away if a recruiter asks for payment, requests bank details before a signed offer, contacts you out of nowhere by WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS (the FTC states real employers do not recruit that way), offers pay far above market rate for no experience, sends you a cheque to buy equipment and asks you to return the balance, or shows you a dashboard of earnings you cannot withdraw until you top up your balance.
Two warnings specific to this audience. If a “remote job” turns out to involve contacting strangers or moving other people’s money, you are inside a scam operation rather than employed by one. And a remote role that requires relocation is a stop signal — INTERPOL reported in 2025 that scam-centre trafficking victims came from 66 countries, recruited through fake job adverts, with West Africa emerging as a regional hub.
How to Actually Get Started
Pick one role that matches your current skills. Set up your payment rail first — before applications, not after — because it determines which platforms will work for you. Spend two weeks building proof: a portfolio, samples, or a completed free certification. Then apply consistently; ten tailored applications a week beat a hundred careless ones.
