This version gives the real numbers, and it also corrects a bigger problem: the VA agencies most guides recommend do not accept applicants from any of the countries our readers live in.

Virtual Assistant Work: The Quick Answer
A new VA with no client history typically earns $200–$600 a month in the first few months, working part-time hours. A VA with a year of experience and two or three steady clients is usually in the $700–$1,500 range. Specialists — executive support, bookkeeping, podcast or e-commerce management — reach $1,500–$2,500+, and that typically takes twelve to eighteen months of client building.
The Correction Most VA Guides Need
Search “virtual assistant jobs” and you will be told to apply to Belay, Time Etc and Fancy Hands. Checking their own pages:
- Belay — US residency required. Their careers page accepts applications from residents of US states only.
- Time Etc — states its assistants are 100% US-based, and requires five to eight years of relevant experience.
- Fancy Hands — describes its workforce as US-based personal assistants.
None of the three is open to workers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, India or the Philippines. Any guide sending you to them is wasting your time. The honest route for this audience is general marketplaces, OnlineJobs.ph if you are Filipino, and direct client acquisition — which, once you get there, pays better than agency work anyway because there is no agency margin.
What a VA Actually Does
“Virtual assistant” covers a wide range, and the range is exactly what determines your rate.

The path upward is not “work harder”. It is moving out of general admin, which is both the lowest paid and, per ILO research on generative AI exposure, the occupational category most exposed to automation. Clerical work is the most exposed group of all. Pick a specialism early.
Skills You Need
Non-negotiable: clear written English; reliability with time zones; spreadsheet competence; the discipline to reply within an agreed window rather than immediately or eventually.
Worth adding: one CRM or project tool your clients’ industry uses; basic bookkeeping; basic design in a free tool; comfort using AI tools to draft and then checking the output, which is increasingly what clients are actually paying a VA to do well.
Equipment and Setup Costs
- Laptop — essential, second-hand is fine. Phone-only does not work for calendar and spreadsheet work.
- Two internet sources on different networks. A VA who disappears mid-morning loses the client, not the hour.
- Power backup — an inverter or a good power bank, budgeted as a business cost.
- A headset if you will take calls. A cheap one is fine; a bad microphone is not.
- Free software to start: Google Workspace’s free tier, a free scheduling tool, a free password manager. Paid tools come after the first client, never before.
Where the Work Actually Is
- Upwork — the largest realistic source. Open to all six of our main reader countries. Service fee is 0–15% per contract, variable and disclosed before you bid; Connects cost $0.15 each. General Virtual Assistance remains the top admin skill in Upwork’s own 2026 demand report.
- Fiverr — you keep 80%. Better for packaged services (“I will manage your inbox for a week”) than hourly work.
- OnlineJobs.ph — specifically for Filipino workers, and the strongest single board if you are in the Philippines.
- Direct outreach — small business owners, coaches, agencies and e-commerce sellers in your own network and on LinkedIn. Slowest to start, highest rate, no platform fee.

One caution on paid job boards: FlexJobs is subscription-only, with a 14-day trial at $2.95 that auto-renews at $23.95 every four weeks. RemoteOK’s paid tiers are $14.95 and $29.95 a month on a 12-month commitment with no free trial. Neither is necessary to find VA work, and both are a real monthly cost in local currency.

Two current facts that catch people out. Nigerian PayPal accounts remain send-only — the “PayPal is back in Nigeria” claims circulating in 2026 appear only on blogs, with no announcement from PayPal itself. And Payoneer’s $29.95 annual fee now triggers when you receive under $6,000 in twelve months, from 23 February 2026 in most countries, rather than only after a year of no activity. For a VA earning $400 a month that is a new annual cost worth planning for.
Landing Your First Client
- Choose one service, not ten. “I manage inboxes and calendars for busy consultants” beats “I do everything” because the client can picture handing you something.
- Build proof without a client. Set up a sample CRM, a sample content calendar, a written process document. Screenshot them. These are your portfolio.
- Write a profile about their problem, not your qualities. “You are answering emails at 11pm” lands; “I am hardworking and detail-oriented” does not.
- Propose a small paid trial — five or ten hours. Lower risk for them, faster yes for you.
- Over-communicate in week one. A short daily summary of what you did builds trust faster than anything else, and trust is what turns a trial into a retainer.
- Move to a monthly retainer as soon as the work is predictable. Retainers are what make this income stable.
Red Flags: Protecting Yourself
VA roles are among the most impersonated in remote-work fraud, because “admin help wanted” is easy to fake. Employment fraud complaints to the FBI’s IC3 reached 24,688 in 2025, up 23% year on year, with over $362 million in reported losses.
- You are asked to pay anything — a fee, a deposit, “training”, or software you must buy. The FTC’s rule is simple: never pay to get paid or to get a job.
- The offer arrived by WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS from nobody you contacted. The FTC states real employers do not recruit that way.
- You are asked to receive money and forward it, or to buy gift cards and send the codes. This is money laundering, and IC3’s definition of employment fraud explicitly includes people who launder money unwittingly.
- You are asked to deposit a cheque and send part of it back. The cheque will bounce after you have sent the money.
- The “dashboard” shows earnings you cannot withdraw until you top up your balance. This is the gamified task-scam structure the FTC has documented driving record losses.
- A remote VA role that requires you to relocate. INTERPOL’s 2025 reporting on scam centres found victims from 66 countries, with West Africa emerging as a hub. Relocation is a stop signal, not an opportunity.
Realistic Timeline
- Weeks 1–2: pick your service, build sample work, set up your payment rail
- Weeks 3–8: profile live, proposals daily, first small client typically lands here
- Months 3–6: two to three clients, $400–$800 a month becoming predictable
- Months 6–12: retainers, raised rates, $700–$1,500
- Months 12–18: specialisation and $1,500–$2,500+ for those who moved out of general admin
Tax and Legal Basics
Income earned from foreign clients is generally declarable where you live, and a written contract protects both sides even for small engagements. Rules differ by country and change — check with your local tax authority or an accountant rather than relying on any article.
