The Two Rounds: Why “The Deadline” Doesn’t Exist

Gates Cambridge runs two selection rounds each year, and mixing them up is the single most common way strong candidates disqualify themselves.

• US Round — deadline 14 October 2026. This is only for applicants who are both US citizens and currently resident in the United States. If you fall in this group you must apply in October, with all documents and references submitted by the deadline, and you are not eligible for the later round.

Two applicants on the same campus can have deadlines a month apart. Applications must be complete, including references, by 11:59 p.m. UK time on your assigned date, and late applications are not considered.

What Gates Cambridge Will NOT Do for You

Two things catch applicants out. First, admission to Cambridge and the Gates scholarship are assessed separately. You can be offered a place and refused the funding, and if that happens you must self-fund or find another award — the offer does not come with a safety net. Second, the scholarship does not lower Cambridge’s academic entry bar. Gates does not nominate or admit you; the department does, and you must clear its requirements on your own merit before funding is even considered.

It also does not cover costs incurred before you arrive: application fees for the Cambridge course, English language test fees, or document preparation. There is no fee to apply for the Gates scholarship itself.

3. Contact a potential supervisor if you are applying for a PhD. Not always mandatory, but a supervisor who supports your proposal strengthens the application considerably.
4. Start the Cambridge graduate application. The Gates Cambridge section sits inside it — complete that funding section; there is no separate application.
